The PRP facial — sometimes called a “vampire facial” — is one of NYC’s most-requested aesthetic treatments. It’s also one of the most over-marketed. Here’s what it actually does, what it doesn’t, and what you should expect at the various NYC providers.
What PRP facial actually is
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) facial combines two things: microneedling (creating tiny channels in the skin) plus the application of your own blood’s plasma, isolated for its growth factors. The growth factors signal your skin to produce new collagen and renew faster.
It is NOT what most magazine articles describe — it doesn’t “inject your blood into your face.” Your blood is drawn, spun in a centrifuge to isolate plasma + platelets, then applied topically (or sometimes injected) into the freshly-microneedled skin.
What PRP facial does well
- Improves skin texture (fine lines, mild scarring, dullness)
- Boosts collagen production over 6-12 weeks
- Brightens tone and reduces under-eye darkness when targeted
- Speeds healing and recovery from sun damage
- Stimulates hair regrowth when applied to the scalp (not face)
What it doesn’t do
- Lift sagging skin (you need RF microneedling, ultrasound, or surgery)
- Erase deep wrinkles (Botox + filler are still the right tools)
- Replace volume (that’s filler’s job)
- Show dramatic results from a single session — it’s a series treatment

PRFM — the upgrade most NYC clients don’t know about
PRFM (platelet-rich fibrin matrix) is essentially “second-generation PRP.” Same blood draw, but the plasma is processed differently to create a longer-lasting fibrin scaffold. Results last roughly 2x longer than standard PRP and the application can target specific zones (under-eye, jawline) more precisely.
If your provider offers PRFM at a reasonable upcharge, it’s usually worth it.
Recovery timeline — NYC-specific
- Day 0: Mild redness, like a moderate sunburn. Plan to be social-light for the evening.
- Day 1-2: Some pinpoint flaking or “sand-paper” texture as the skin sheds.
- Day 3-5: Skin looks slightly tighter and brighter. Can return to normal NYC life — workouts, dinners, events.
- Week 1-3: Surface texture continues to improve. Consider not getting a peel or laser during this window.
- Week 4-12: Collagen remodeling continues. Best results visible at 8-12 weeks.
Plan a PRP facial 2-3 weeks before any major event. Right after a session you look slightly red; a few days later you look glowy. Two weeks out is the sweet spot for an event.
Who should consider PRP
- Patients in their 30s-50s with good skin foundation seeking refinement
- Anyone who has plateaued on serums + topical retinoids
- Patients with mild acne scarring or texture concerns
- Anyone preparing for a wedding, anniversary, or major life event 6-12 weeks out
Who should skip it
- Anyone with active acne, eczema flares, or open skin lesions
- Patients on blood thinners (need clearance from prescriber first)
- Pregnant or trying to conceive
- Anyone seeking immediate / single-session results — PRP is patient
How to pick a NYC provider
- Ask about the centrifuge. Bigger / newer centrifuges produce better-quality plasma. Cheap medspas often use under-spec equipment.
- Ask who draws + processes the blood. RN or higher only.
- Ask if they offer PRFM as an upgrade. Providers who do have invested in better technology.
- Look at before/afters at 8-12 weeks, not 1 week. 1-week photos show inflammation, not real results.
- Ask about combining with microneedling alone vs RF microneedling. A real provider will discuss when PRP belongs in your plan vs alternative tools.
